Set in the 1980s, Ironbound tells the life story of the ex-con Robert Vidal and his struggles to pursue a honest life. Having lost his job at General Motors and having his car stolen with the gear he needed for work, Robert is left helpless and unable to pay rent for the apartment where he lives with his pregnant wife
Life takes an unexpected turn when a man named Ruben Perrone, a cocaine drug dealer, presents Robert with an opportunity to support his family; a job as Ruben’s personal driver.
Once submerged in the criminal life of Newark, New Jersey, Robert discovers that it’s easier to get into the world of crime than it is getting out. After a shootout with a rival cartel leads to Perrone’s murder, Robert transforms into one of the most ruthless and feared drug lords on the East Coast, attracting the attention of the police enforcement.
The three-seasons structure is told through a series of flashbacks narrated by Robert who is working as a barber, in the present day.
In the present timeline, Robert befriends a young boy, Jimmy, who he finds dealing drugs outside of his shop. Sharing the story of his past discretions, Robert tries to guide Jimmy onto the right path, hoping to gain some form of redemption for his sinful past.
